I had long known that in nineteenth century British pornography, the word 'spend' is often used to mean 'come.' I didn't think about it to much but it seemed explicable merely on the basis of such words as 'expend' (but a further a look shows that that word, despite appearances, is not from the Latin).
It turns out that *spend is a preserved Proto-Indoeuropean form. It means to libate (i.e., to pour out a liquid offering--such as beer or wine--as a sacrifice to the gods). Who knew such a powerful metaphor was lurking there?
And what a contrast to the ordinary use of 'spend' in relation to money, since, in Freudian theory, money is treated by the unconscious mind as equivalent to excrement!
